Electronic locks (sometimes referred to as electric locks) are a modern, reliable security tool. Usually, they are installed in hotels and offices. Does it make sense to install an electronic lock on the front door of your house?
Electronic lock – a device designed to prevent access to the premises of unauthorized persons, or vice versa, to limit the exit from the premises. The electronic lock is called the most diverse design, the work of which is carried out from electricity or which are somehow connected with electronics. These are electromagnetic, and code, and electromechanical, and biometrical, and invisibility locks, and solenoid, and complex access control systems.
What does an electronic lock consist of?
The locks are different in design, but you can identify the main components:
- A locking mechanism (electromagnetic or electromechanical);
- The reader is an individual sensor that receives a signal to open the door;
- Owner’s identifier (key) – magnetic keychain or microchip card, electronic “tablet key,” a biometric scanner device, remote control or device for dialing code;
- A controller or system that manages and processes information;
- Rechargeable battery for uninterrupted power supply.
The main types of locks
Electronic locks come in various kinds. By way of unlocking/locking, they are divided into:
A powerful electromagnet holds an electromagnetic lock – the door in the closed state;
Electromechanical lock – locking bolts are pulled out and retracted by a mini-electromotor under the influence of a control signal.
By type of key, electronic locks are divided into:
- Lock with a physical key (for example, with a key-tablet)
- Combination lock
- Biometric lock
How does the electronic lock work?
The principle of operation is simple:
The receiving sensor reads the bio-parameters, receives a signal from the owner’s key (from a magnetic card, a bar code, a key fob, a smartphone or a control panel) and transmits it to the controller;
The control controller checks the correctness of the read signal and transmits the command to the lock mechanism (with an incorrect input, it can trigger an alarm);
The lock works – opens or locks the door.
All this system works only with the presence of electric power. In the event of a trip, the lock operates on the battery. Since the power consumption in the device is small, it is usually a quite a small battery.
Any lock of this type can block the pickup from the sensor. Usually, this is done with a unique key. The owner can lock the door if he does not want to be disturbed, or restrict access to some of the premises.
An important feature of electronic (primarily electromechanical) locks – they can be controlled remotely. It is convenient to open the gate to the guest without leaving the house. You can also control the garage door. This opportunity is used increasingly as the technologies of the smart house spread. Such locks are built into the general system of an intelligent house, which is usually tied to the owner’s smartphone, which makes it possible to control the lock from the smartphone, remotely opening and closing it when necessary.
